Clara Aden is a passionate painter known for her refined pencils drawings. Born Elizabeth Omolara Adenugba, she has been a professional illustrator since 1999, and works as a Production Manager for Hearts Magazine. She studied Painting and Decorating at Federal Science Technical College, Yaba.
Realism is the main feature of Aden's practice. Her works are precise and detailed, taking a critical look at social, political and cultural issues with a profound emphasis on feminine gender identity. Her body of works reflect and recreate experiences ranging from childhood memories to the challenges and crises of a transformation into motherhood.
Aden has exhibited in the United States, Norway, Germany and Hungary. Her drawings have been celebrated internationally at Global Images of U.S Women, Pennsylvania in 2015 as well as the Amref Artball, a premier African art auction and philanthropic event, in 2019.
She was awarded the Gani Odutokun Award of Excellence in 2016 by African Art Resource centre, won the Global Network Research Development (GNRD) Freedom of Expression art competition in Norway in 2015, received 2nd place at the Buddy Bear Design art contest at the German Embassy Abuja in 2016. Aden is the recipient of the 2018 International Artist Residency Award with the Omooba Yemisi Adedoyin Shyllon Art Foundation (OYASAF).
Aden recently participated in the Project Space Lagos project, an experimental residency project curated by Nigerian-German curator Emeka Udemba, during the Lagos Biennial 2019. The resulting drawing installation addresses the impact of climate change on Lagos City and its inhabitants.
