Noluthando Precious Mcira, alias Vry_blvk (b. 1998) was born and raised in a small township along the outskirts of Pretoria, Ekangala. She currently resides in Johannesburg, where she is pursuing her Fine Arts degree at the University of the Witwatersrand.
Her journey into art began at an early age and with the help of art teachers and family critics she honed her skills further at Pro Arte Alphen Park, Pretoria, where she majored in Visual Art.
Her inspirations and influences are constantly evolving; drawing inspiration from peers, other artists and music.
Like Andy Warhol, she’s created a brand for herself—‘Vry_blvk’ - derived from a song by Jamila Woods. Through her brand she seeks to initiater join in on conversations; expressively communicating her ideas and visions.
Mcira incorporates a variety of mediums, using her body as a tool to create drawings.
She’s constantly trying out new mediums, to grow her understanding of materials and in tackling the subjects of African spirituality and Christianity through the exploration of the politically embedded subject – hair.
She has exhibited at the Tshwane Art Festival at the State Theatre (2016) Pretoria, State Theatre Gala Exhibitions (Pro Arte), Women’s Craft and Heritage Month (2019) IDC gallery Johannesburg, Collect Call // Diaspora Dial (Forme Femine) 2020 and “#AllWomxnMatter” (2020) Julie Miller African Contemporary gallery, Johannesburg.
